This table gives the cut off points (critical values) of the chi-square distribution. The alpha is the area under the curve to the right of the critical value.

Examples on how to use the table

1. What is the probability that a chi-square random variable with 3 degrees of freedom is greater than 7.815?

Solution

Run down 1st column until df = 3; now run along this row until you find the number closest to 7.815. Finally run up the column to the value of alpha. That's your answer.

The answer is: probability 0.05.

2. What's the critical value of a chi-square random variable with 95 degrees of freedom at the 5% significance level?

Solution.

Note that df = 95 is not in the table. It seems sensible to take the average of the critical value for df=90 and df=100 which are in the table. Critical value at 5% sig level for df=90 is 113.145, and 124.342 for df=100.

So answer is: (113.145 + 124.342)/2 = 118.74
